About the Department of Psychology

The Department of Psychology was established in 1954 with the college itself. Since then, the department has been playing a crucial role in advancing the field of psychology by imparting quality education to students, conducting research to enhance our understanding of human behaviour, and serving the community through its outreach activities.

Objectives:

Preparing budding psychologists equipped with state-of-the-art knowledge of the field.
Elevating the quality of life of people by community services.
Empowering women with professional skills
Generation and dissemination of new knowledge through research activities.

Courses: The department offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and PhD courses

B. A. (Hons.) Psychology: This course aims to provide knowledge of different branches of psychology. This lays a strong foundation of the subject along with inculcating the practical skills of conducting experiments and administering psychological tests.
M. A. Psychology: This course provides advanced knowledge of the field. Specialisations are provided in various areas of Psychology. The introduction of MOOCs such as SWAYAM is also a distinct feature of our P.G. programme. Students are also provided opportunities for dissertations which fosters research skills as well as logical and critical thinking among the students.
Ph.D. in Psychology: The department also offers a Ph.D. programme to promising students. Our students have contributed significantly in various research areas such as cognitive psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, positive psychology, and organisational behaviour.

Interdisciplinary Practice

Manaswini: The department has its psychology club known as ‘Manaswini’ which is handled by the students of the department under the supervision of the faculties. The objective of the club is to provide psychological services to the students of Vasant Kanya Mahavidyalaya. It also aims to reach out to the community for sensitising people and providing testing services for various mental health issues.
Professional Development: The Department of Psychology hosts several invited lectures, seminars, workshops, and conferences to foster professional development for faculty, students, and practitioners. We also facilitate internships and provide placement opportunities for students interested in pursuing careers in psychology.
Extension Activities: The department regularly organizes field visits to various mental health institutes and organizations to provide practical knowledge to students. It also encourages collaborations with other significant institutions of psychology. A constant effort to promote interdisciplinary knowledge is also a distinct feature of the department.
e-Magazine: The department publishes an e-magazine under the psychology club. This helps disseminate the psychological knowledge relevant to society in simple language and expression. It motivates students to continuously upgrade their knowledge and embellish their writing skills as well.
