Vasant Kanya Mahavidyalaya (V.K.M.) was inaugurated on the 10th July, 1954 by Dr. C.P. Ramaswamy Iyer, the then Vice-Chancellor of the Banaras Hindu University and has successfully celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2004-2005. Its aspiration to attain academic excellence has given it a rare opportunity to be “entered to the privileges of Banaras Hindu University” as per the decision of the B.H.U. Academic Council and Visitor’s Approval (President of India).
VKM, a postgraduate institution has withstood the challenges of time to leave its imprint in the world of women’s education only because of the fact that it draws sustenance from the vision of Dr. Annie Besant, Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya, Dr. Rohit Mehta and others who worked to link up education with culture and balance freedom with responsibility. With a holistic end in mind, the college pursues the motto “education as service”, so that the students become responsible citizens, able to serve the community. The academic, the co-curricular and the extra-curricular events brace the young girls up to face, understand and address the challenges of the society, which is changing fast.
The college runs B.A. programme, which comprises subjects, both from the areas of Arts and Social Sciences. Since 2009-10, VKM is running five PG programmes too. The teaching departments of the College offer 2 add-on programmes also.
The academic and administrative staff is well qualified to address the aspirations of more than 1500 students. The achievements of the students have been consistently remarkable. They have topped the list of successful students of B.A. and M.A Examinations several times, secured position of merit, medals and scholarships. The College encourages the students to take part in extra-curricular activities such as NSS, Sports, Cultural Activities, and Debates etc. to inculcate social awareness among them. A well-structured feedback mechanism on curriculum is in operation in the College. Feedback forms are issued to outgoing students to assess their opinion in the matter of curriculum followed and other academic activities and if any lapses are noticed, corrective measures are taken immediately. The College has a well-stocked library, consisting of classified books and journals, which caters to the academic needs of the students for the whole academic year.
The focus is on skill development, career oriented programs, industry visit, industry - academia interaction. College has brought all these aspects under curriculum implementation and enrichment. Special attention is given to weak students especially belonging to SC/ST., OBC and minority groups.
With the vision to achieve excellence in higher education, empowerment through knowledge, inclusive growth for socio-economic change, sustainable development and preparing students for facing global requirements, the College attempts to nurture student’s competence and creativity through innovations in teaching-learning, research and extension activities. The college focuses upon women’s education, optimum use of human and infrastructural facilities available, participation of all the stakeholders in development of the College, creation of awareness of human rights, value system, culture, heritage, scientific temper and environment.
